The Toronto Urban Film Festival (TUFF) kicks off tomorrow, bringing TTC Subway commuters a wide range of one minute short silent films on subway platforms across Toronto.
TUFF will screen 73 films from 18 countries on over 300 of the TTC’s Pattison Onestop subway platform screens. TUFF is also the only commuter film festival of its kind in North America.
zeeBigBang spoke with Sharon Switzer, TUFF Executive Director, about her inspiration behind founding this film festival six years ago and what this year’s festival has in store for Toronto commuters.
"The inspiration came from the location. I started working for Pattinson Onestop and we started talking about arts programming that we could do, so the idea for doing the film festival came out of that. We wanted to include artists and filmmakers and give them a space on the screens that are normally reserved for advertising."

With 1.3 million viewers per day, Switzer hopes to give the commuters “a really interesting experience,” as well as open them up to a wide range of artistic expression through the films.
"We used to get a lot of films that were ambient. People’s solution to one minute films was to shoot the driving around the city or to shoot rain on a window, because people didn’t feel like they could, or needed to, tell a story in a minute. I have to say that over the years, we’re less and less interested in that kind of work. The things that standout are the things that manage to tell an interesting story in a minute," said Switzer.
A new program as part of this year’s TUFF is the “Too TUFF for the TTC,” which is a selection of one-minute films that are well-executed but too risque to screen in a public transit setting.
TUFF’s top three films will be selected by this year’s guest judge, Canadian documentary filmmaker, Jennifer Baichwal, known for her films, Manufactured Landscapes and Payback: Debt and the Shadow Side of Wealth.
TUFF will run until Septemeber 17, 2012, with all the films available for viewing on their website.
